About The Fund

Such funds have supported upgrading undergraduate student laboratory experiences including adding modern sensing equipment for water-collection systems in freshman engineering design-build-test to the hardware and software needed in our new sensor and circuits smart-systems sophomore class to development of virtual reality experiences in structural engineering for seniors. They have also been used to help modernize our research laboratories with state of the art equipment to recruit and retain top faculty.

Strategic funds allow civil and environmental engineering faculty and students to assist communities in need both locally and globally. Such support allowed a team to travel to Flint, Michigan to participate in the city’s recovery efforts following the discovery of lead-tainted drinking water, a local student chapter of Bridges to Prosperity, to assist rural communities around the world, and young faculty to attend American Society of Civil Engineering Teaching workshops to enhance their classroom teaching skills.

As our undergraduate recruitment ebbs and soars periodically, we continuously seek ways to attract the best and brightest students to our department including engaging our community of alumni, faculty, and students in retreats to evaluate our curricula, class offerings, and degree requirements to ensure that we’re providing a top-tier education with eyes on both current trends and upcoming needs.  In an environment in which dollars are typically assigned to very particular programs or activities, funding these cross-program, department-wide assessments can be difficult. This fund has made these critical evaluations possible, along with enabling the creation of new recruitment materials to communicate the contemporary face and programs of the Department of  Civil and Environmental Engineering.
